Environmental Responsibility & Sustainability
At Smith Grayson we maintain the highest standards of Environmental Responsibility. We regularly review our procedures and methods to ensure we minimise or remove any impact to the environment. Some of the core ways we minimise our impact on the environment are as follows:
Green Waste and Composting
By working with a local Farmer, we now recycle the green waste that we produce by turning it into compost for agricultural use.
Using Battery powered tools
We always use the most efficient machinery, and in 2019 we introduced battery tools on some of our sites to reduce the use of fossil fuels, and our carbon footprint. We are currently using battery powered hedge cutters and pruners, strimmers and brush cutters where possible.
Chemical free moss removal
Though mosses may not be the plants that everyone wants to grow, they come with great benefits and make our world a better place. They clean our water, clear our air, and prevent erosion.
With this in mind we offer a chemical free moss removal option on hardstanding areas to avoid any negative impact on the environment.
Organic chemical free lawn treatments
There are so many chemical lawn treatments available, such as weedkillers and lawn feed. At Smith Grayson we have tried most of them over the years and have realised that putting chemicals into the ground is not something that we want to be a party to if we can find alternatives, so have researched the most environmentally friendly ways of improving lawns.
We are confident that we use the best quality organic products that give amazing results on lawns and grass to improve their appearance and finish to make our clients proud of their green spaces.
Using electric vehicles
In 2020 we started making the switch to using electric vehicles, a move that we are proud of.
Planning Journeys
Our schedules take a lot of planning to ensure that we make the most efficient use of our transport and to minimise mileage
Encouraging Wildflower Planting Areas
The presence of wildflowers with nectar-rich plants helps support dwindling populations of native pollinators including butterflies, moths, and bees, helping to sustain insects that pollinate our food crops. This is particularly important in increasingly built-up environments.
We actively encourage our clients to consider an area of wildflower planting. Even planting or seeding a small area of wildflowers can not only look stunning but has a huge positive impact on our environment.
Bee Friendly Planting
When planning planting schemes, we will always try to suggest plants that are not only suitable for their location and to give the look that our client requires, but we will always try to source bee and pollinator friendly plants.
Recycling
Litter picking is an important part of keeping grounds looking tidy, but the recycling part also plays a part in reducing our carbon footprint and looking after the planet. All our waste litter is separated and sorted for recycling.
Tree Planting
For every tree that we fell or remove we will always consider if there is a viable re-planting option. We also work alongside local authorities to make the most of government funded planting schemes for trees and hedges and take pride in all our tree re-planting schemes.
When re-planting trees we will consider the location and local environmental factors to ensure that the tree that we are planting have the best chance of surviving and growing into happy healthy trees, so will provide aftercare advice and periodic checks if required.
